About KENAI
Kenai is a company born from the desire to do good in the environment, and improving the land and waters in which we live, work, and play. With fond memories hosting family and friends with kaimoana collected from the rocks Caleb's family have visited over four generations, he wants to ensure natural resources remain in good shape continuing to provide for future generations of his whānau.
To ensure this happens he started Kenai Limited to contribute positively to a better Aotearoa. Born in Alaska while his Kiwi parents worked on the northern slopes, the company's name pays tribute to this whakapapa as Caleb entered the world in Central Peninsula Hospital, Kenai.
Pronounced Ki – nai or Kee-ny and being a city in the Kenai Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska, one hundred and eighty-seven miles south of Anchorage (Alaska's largest city).
At age one, Caleb came home to Rotorua, where his parents originated from, with whakapapa to Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Porou. Growing up in Rotorua, where the family-owned and operated business in the forestry sector was based, he soon grew a passion for all things outdoors before heading off to the University of Auckland to further pursue his passion in Environmental Science. His upbringing is held close and shines through in the way our company operates:
Manaakitanga – Hospitality, kindness, generosity, support
Kaitiakitanga – Doing our best to protect our environment
Whanaungatanga – Building genuine, meaningful relationships
